We dream of a world not threatened by destruction
This series focuses on attentive portrayal of individuals affected by state and military violence, with all proceeds going to those represented, or to a family facing similar circumstances if the original reference is uncontactable. Through direct communications with those involved and use of the artworks as fundraising materials (via local art markets, gallery shows, and public demonstrations), I strive to represent my subjects respectfully and in response to their needs. “We dream of a world not threatened by destruction” is a quote from a prayer for peace from my family’s Haggadah, in which we pledge to remember our ancestors’ enslavement and to strive for the liberation of oppressed peoples during our lifetimes. Through my work, I seek to honor these moral, religious, hereditary obligations. By approaching each artwork as a collaboration, I hope to encourage a more personal confrontation between the viewer and those whose identities have been dehumanized and abstracted; to highlight and honor the vibrant individuality of each person and allow them to communicate themselves to the viewer. Please click on each portrait for more information about the individuals they represent and the families they benefit.
